Every food leaves an "ash" residue after digestion that the body treats as acid-forming, alkaline-forming, or neutral. Food combining suggests that meals digest most easily when we don't mix foods that need opposite digestive conditions β and when the overall day leans slightly alkaline.
Acidic
Acid-forming foods. Best paired with non-starchy vegetables, not with starches or sweet fruits.
Alkaline
Alkaline-forming foods. The backbone of food combining β pair freely with each other.
Neutral
Neutral foods like fats. Combine well with most categories in moderation.

Alkaline is the base
Build meals around alkaline vegetables β they combine with almost everything.
Never acid + alkaline
Don't mix acid-forming proteins with alkaline starches in the same meal.
Melons fly solo
Melons digest fastest of all β eat them alone, on an empty stomach.
Mind the fruit order
Sweet and acid fruits don't mix; sub-acid fruits bridge the two.
Fruit first
Eat fruit 20β30 minutes before a meal, never as dessert after one.
One protein at a time
Keep to a single concentrated protein per meal for easiest digestion.
Healthy Eating Guidelines
Build around vegetables
Make alkaline vegetables the largest part of every plate. They combine safely with nearly all foods and buffer acid-forming choices.
One protein per meal
Choose a single concentrated protein (meat, fish, eggs, tofu) and pair it with non-starchy vegetables β not with starch or another protein.
Starch OR protein, not both
Starches and proteins need opposite digestive conditions. Pick one as the meal's centerpiece and surround it with vegetables.
Eat melons alone
Melons pass through the stomach in minutes. Combined with other food they ferment β enjoy them 20β30 minutes before a meal.
Fruit on an empty stomach
Fruit digests fast. Eat it before meals, not after, so it isn't trapped behind slow-digesting cooked food.
Stay hydrated
Water supports digestion and helps the body buffer acid-forming foods. Sip between meals rather than during them.
Chew thoroughly
Digestion begins in the mouth. Chewing well reduces the load on your stomach and improves how each food combines.
Aim for alkaline-leaning
Over the day, favor more alkaline-forming foods than acid-forming ones to support overall balance.
Fruit Grouping Rules
Fruits are the strictest category β know the groups to combine them well.
Sweet Fruits
Bananas, dates, figs. Best with other sweet fruits or sub-acid. Avoid mixing with acid fruits.
Sub-Acid Fruits
Apples, pears, berries, grapes, mango. The most flexible β mix with sweet or acid fruits.
Acid Fruits
Citrus, pineapple, pomegranate. Mix with sub-acid, but not with sweet fruits.
Melons
Watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew. Eat ALONE β they digest fastest of all and ferment if combined.
Neutral Fruits
Avocado, tomato. Fatty/low-sugar fruits that combine more like vegetables.

Protein + Non-Starchy Vegetables
Acid-forming proteins digest well with alkaline, low-starch vegetables. Vegetables don't compete with protein for digestion.
Starch + Vegetables
Starches combine cleanly with alkaline vegetables. Avoid adding protein to a starch meal.
Sweet Fruits together
Sweet fruits digest similarly and combine well with each other or sub-acid fruits.
Sub-Acid + Acid Fruits
Sub-acid fruits bridge sweet and acid β they mix with both, so they pair with acid citrus.
Melons β always alone
Melons digest faster than any other food. Eat them solo on an empty stomach, or not at all.
Vegetable Salad (mostly alkaline)
An all-vegetable meal is the safest combination β everything is alkaline or neutral.

Acid Fruit + Sweet Fruit

Acid fruits retard the digestion of sweet fruits, which then ferment in the gut.
Melons + anything

Melons move through the stomach in minutes. Held up by other food, they ferment and cause gas.
Two concentrated proteins
Cheese & meat, eggs & nuts

Fats + high-protein
